What are HSS rolls?
HSS (High Speed Steel) rolls are rolling mill rolls made from steel rich in molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten and chromium. These elements form very hard carbides (MC, M2C and M6C) that sit evenly in a tempered martensitic matrix. The result is a roll with high wear resistance, thermal crack resistance and resistance to surface roughening.
Because the passes wear slowly, the groove shape holds for longer. Mills change passes less often, lose less production time and use fewer rolls per tonne of finished steel. That is why HSS is the roll of choice for finishing stands, where wear and surface quality matter most.
