Overview

What are adamite rolls?

Adamite rolls, also known as alloy steel base rolls, are hyper-eutectoid steel rolls with 1.0% to 2.0% carbon, alloyed with nickel, chromium and molybdenum. Vimco Rolls is an adamite rolls manufacturer and supplier making adamite rolls for steel rolling mills, also called adamite steel rolls. The alloying adds toughness and resistance to thermal fatigue. It is part of the range we make as a rolling mill rolls manufacturer since 1972.

The rolls go through a multi-stage heat treatment: annealing first, then carefully controlled tempering cycles. The result is a fine pearlitic matrix with spheroidised carbides, giving wear resistance, fire crack resistance and constant hardness across the working layer.

Their key advantage is near-uniform hardness from surface to core, so the working layer keeps its hardness as the roll wears and is redressed.

Where it is used

Where adamite rolls sit in a TMT bar or wire rod mill

In TMT bar and wire rod mills, adamite rolls work at the start of the line, in the roughing stands. In section and structural mills they are used in every stage.

Benefits

Why mills use adamite rolls in roughing stands

01

Near-uniform hardness

Hardness stays almost constant from surface to core, across the whole working layer.

02

Fire crack resistance

Nickel, chromium and molybdenum plus controlled tempering give resistance to thermal fatigue and fire cracking.

03

Wear resistance with toughness

Spheroidised carbides in a fine pearlitic matrix resist wear, and the Ni, Cr, Mo alloying adds toughness.

Hardness from surface to core

Our hardness chart shows the two ends of the range falling from about 53 to 49 Shore C and from about 41 to 38 Shore C over the first 90 mm from the surface: a drop of only 3 to 4 Shore C. The micrograph (100x) shows the fine structure.

FAQ

Adamite rolls: frequently asked questions

What are adamite rolls?

Adamite rolls, also called alloy steel base rolls, are hyper-eutectoid steel rolls with 1.0% to 2.0% carbon, alloyed with nickel, chromium and molybdenum. After annealing and controlled tempering they have a fine pearlitic matrix with spheroidised carbides, which gives wear resistance, fire crack resistance and near-uniform hardness from surface to core.

What does hyper-eutectoid mean in an adamite roll?

It means the steel carries more carbon than eutectoid steel. In adamite rolls the carbon is 1.0% to 2.0%, and the extra carbon forms the carbides that give the roll its wear resistance.

Which mill stands use adamite rolls?

Roughing stands of TMT bar, wire rod and hot strip mills; roughing, intermediate and finishing stands of section and structural mills; and rail mills, universal beam mills and billet mills.

What grades and hardness do Vimco adamite rolls come in?

Three grades: AD-42 at 40-45 Shore C, AD-47 at 45-50 Shore C and AD-52 at 50-55 Shore C.

What is the chemical composition of an adamite roll?

Across our three grades: C 1.4-2.1%, Mn 0.5-1.0%, Si 0.3-0.7%, Cr 0.8-1.6%, Ni 0.4-1.5%, Mo 0.2-0.5%, with S and P at 0.05% max. Carbon, chromium and nickel rise from AD-42 to AD-52. The grade-by-grade table is on this page.

Does the hardness of an adamite roll drop as it wears?

Very little. One of the key advantages of adamite rolls is uniform hardness from surface to core. Our hardness chart shows a fall of only about 3 to 4 Shore C over the first 90 mm from the surface.

What is the difference between adamite and alloy cast steel rolls?

Adamite rolls are hyper-eutectoid, with 1.0-2.0% carbon plus Ni, Cr and Mo, at 40-55 Shore C, used mainly in roughing stands of TMT bar, wire rod and strip mills. Alloy cast steel rolls are hypo-eutectoid, with 0.5-0.8% carbon plus Cr and Mo, at 30-40 Shore C, double annealed for toughness, and used in roughing stands of medium and heavy section mills.

How are adamite rolls heat treated?

Through a multi-stage heat treatment that starts with annealing and is followed by carefully controlled tempering cycles. This gives wear resistance, fire crack resistance and constant hardness across the working layer.

Who manufactures adamite rolls in India?

Vimco Rolls Pvt Ltd manufactures adamite rolls in grades AD-42, AD-47 and AD-52 at its plant in Dera Bassi, Punjab. We have made rolling mill rolls since 1972, with processes consistent with ISO 9001:2015.

Do you export Adamite rolls?

Yes. Vimco Rolls supplies rolls to rolling mills across India and exports overseas, shipping to mills from Georgia to South Africa and from Nepal to Saudi Arabia. Share your destination country with your enquiry.

Which rolling mills does Vimco supply adamite rolls to?

We supply adamite rolls to the roughing stands of TMT bar, wire rod and hot strip mills, to all stands of section and structural mills, and to rail, universal beam and billet mills. Recent dispatch: SGI and adamite rolls to customers. You can see the mills we serve on our clients page.
