D2 & D3 Section Straightening Rolls
Section straightening rolls are the profiled rolls in a straightening machine that bend rolled sections back and forth until they come out straight. Vimco supplies straightening rolls in D2 and D3 high carbon high chromium (HCHC) tool steel for section straightening machines.
What straightening rolls do
After a section leaves the mill and cools, it is rarely perfectly straight. Angles and channels can bow or twist, and beam flanges can spread in or out. A section straightening machine passes the cold section between a set of top and bottom rolls, set in a staggered line. Each roll bends the section slightly in the opposite direction to the one before, so the bends cancel out and the section leaves straight.
The rolls are shaped to fit each section profile, and they work on cold steel under heavy pressure. Their shape and surface have to hold up over long runs, or the finished section picks up marks and goes out of tolerance. This is why straightening rolls are made from hardened tool steel such as D2 and D3.

D2 or D3: which grade to choose
| Property | D2 | D3 |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 1.40 to 1.60% | 2.00 to 2.35% |
| Chromium (Cr) | 11.00 to 13.00% | 11.00 to 13.50% |
| Hardening | Air hardened | Oil quenched |
| Typical hardness range of the grade | 55 to 62 HRC | 58 to 64 HRC |
| Best for | Heavier sections and rolls that see bending shock | Maximum wear life on steady, abrasive work |
