- Core grey or nodular iron
- Bending 700-1000 N/mm²
What are ICDP rolls?
ICDP (Indefinite Chilled Double Poured) rolls, also called DPIC or double poured indefinite chilled rolls, have a hard alloyed iron working layer and a softer grey iron or nodular iron core. The two metals are poured separately, using a combination of spin and static casting, so each part of the roll does its own job.
The shell has a bainitic matrix in which the amount of flaky graphite gradually decreases towards the centre. The graphite improves thermal conductivity and roll life; the soft core gives fracture toughness. Together they give wear resistance, reliable toughness and a good surface finish on the rolled product.

Vimco Rolls is an ICDP rolls manufacturer and supplier, with three grades: IC-III, IC-IV and IC-V. Comparing with HSS? Read HSS vs ICDP rolls. It is part of the range we make as a rolling mill rolls manufacturer since 1972.

Why a double poured roll: hard shell, tough core
Hard alloyed iron
Bainitic matrix with flake graphite. Gives wear resistance where the roll meets the bar, and the graphite improves thermal conductivity and roll life.
Grey or nodular iron
A softer core gives the roll its fracture toughness, so it stands up to rolling loads.
Finish and integrity
Suited to stands where surface finish quality and roll integrity are critical.
Hardness from surface to core
The chart shows hardness against depth from the roll surface: it stays high through the working layer, then drops at around 40-50 mm depth into the softer core. The micrograph (100x) shows the shell structure.
ICDP roll grades and chemical composition
Three shell grades on a common core. From IC-III to IC-V, nickel and chromium rise; carbon stays at 3.0-3.6%.

Our clients
Vimco Rolls has supplied rolls to rolling mills since 1972. These are some of the steel makers we serve, mostly TMT bar and wire rod re-rolling mills.
Industries
Steel re-rolling: TMT bars, wire rods, sections, strip and plate.
Recent dispatch: a lot of ICDP rolls to a strip mill customer in Raipur.
ICDP rolls vs SGI acicular rolls
Every roll grade has its own place in the mill, so we compare ICDP rolls only with the rolls that run the same stands.
Both are options for the intermediate and finishing stands of TMT bar, wire rod and structural mills, and for the finishing stands of strip mills.
| Property | ICDP rolls (this page) | SGI acicular rolls |

Which one suits your mill depends on the stand and the steel you roll. Send us the stand and grade and we will recommend one.
ICDP rolls: frequently asked questions
What are ICDP rolls?
ICDP rolls are Indefinite Chilled Double Poured rolls. They have a hard alloyed iron working layer (the shell) and a softer grey iron or nodular iron core, cast together using a combination of spin and static casting. The shell has a bainitic matrix with flake graphite, which gives wear resistance and good thermal conductivity, while the soft core gives fracture toughness.
What is the full form of ICDP roll?
ICDP roll full form: Indefinite Chilled Double Poured roll. ICDP stands for Indefinite Chilled Double Poured. 'Indefinite chilled' describes the shell iron, and 'double poured' means the shell and the core are poured as two separate metals.
What material is an ICDP roll made of?
An ICDP roll has two materials: a hard alloyed iron shell (3.0-3.6% carbon with nickel, chromium and molybdenum, in a bainitic matrix with flake graphite) and a softer grey iron or nodular iron core.
Which mill stands use ICDP rolls?
Intermediate and finishing stands of wire rod mills, TMT mills and structural mills, and finishing stands of strip, sheet and flat rolling mills.
What grades of ICDP rolls does Vimco make?
Three grades: IC-III, IC-IV and IC-V. All three have 3.0-3.6% carbon in the shell. Nickel rises from 2.0-3.0% in IC-III to 3.0-4.0% in IC-IV and 3.0-4.8% in IC-V, and chromium from 0.7-1.2% in IC-III to 1.0-2.0% in IC-IV and IC-V.
What is the chemical composition of an ICDP roll?
Shell (by grade): C 3.0-3.6%, Mn 0.4-1.2%, Si 0.6-1.5%, Cr 0.7-2.0%, Ni 2.0-4.8%, Mo 0.2-2.0%, S and P 0.05% max. Core: C 3.1-3.5%, Mn 0.6-0.9%, Si 1.2-1.5%, Cr 0.2-0.5%, Ni 0.4-1.0%. The full grade-by-grade table is on this page.
What are the mechanical properties of ICDP rolls?
Tensile strength 400-500 N/mm2 and bending strength 700-1000 N/mm2.
Why does an ICDP roll have a soft core?
The hard shell does the rolling and resists wear; the softer grey or nodular iron core gives the roll its toughness, so it resists fracture under rolling loads.
Should I use ICDP or HSS rolls in my finishing stands?
Both are used in finishing stands of TMT bar and wire rod mills. HSS rolls (80-85 Shore C) have a pass life estimated at 5-6 times that of conventional rolls; ICDP rolls are also used in intermediate stands and in strip, sheet and flat mills. Our guide HSS vs ICDP rolls compares them in detail, or send us your mill and stand details for a recommendation.
