Overview

What are TC rings?

TC rings (tungsten carbide roll rings, also called carbide roll rings, cemented carbide roll rings or tungsten carbide rolls) are rolling mill rings made of tungsten carbide bonded with cobalt or nickel. The carbide gives extreme hardness and wear resistance; the binder holds it together and adds strength.

That suits them to the places where wear is highest and rolling speed is fastest: the finishing blocks of wire rod mills and the roll sleeves of high-speed finishing mills. They are also used in seamless pipe stretch reducing mills and as three-dimensional rolls for cold-rolled ribbed steel bars.

Vimco Rolls is a TC rings manufacturer and supplier in India, offering carbide roll rings in nine compositions, with outer diameters up to 480 mm and thicknesses up to 130 mm. It is part of the range we make as a rolling mill rolls manufacturer since 1972.

Where it is used

Where TC rings are used in a rolling mill

TC rings work at the very end of the line, in the finishing block, after the HSS, ICDP and SGI rolls of the roughing, intermediate and finishing stands.

Benefits

Why mills use tungsten carbide rings

01

Extreme hardness

78.0 to 88.0 HRA across our compositions, so passes resist wear in the fastest, hottest part of the mill.

02

Long service life

High wear resistance gives TC rings a long service life in long, high-speed rolling runs.

03

Heat resistance and strength

Tungsten carbide combines heat resistance, wear resistance and strength, with bending strength of 2,200 to 2,700 N/mm² in our range.

Compositions

TC ring compositions and properties

Nine tungsten carbide compositions. As the binder share rises, hardness, density and compressive strength fall; bending strength peaks at 15% binder.

Compare

TC rings vs HSS rolls

Every roll grade has its own place in the mill, so we compare TC rings only with the rolls that run the same stands.

Both work the last stands of a wire rod or bar mill: TC rings in the finishing block, HSS rolls in the finishing stands.

FAQ

TC rings: frequently asked questions

What are TC rings?

TC rings are tungsten carbide roll rings: rolling mill rings made of tungsten carbide (WC) bonded with cobalt or nickel. The combination gives very high hardness and wear resistance, which suits high-speed and long-duration rolling such as wire rod finishing blocks.

What is the full form of TC ring?

TC ring full form: Tungsten Carbide ring. TC stands for Tungsten Carbide, and a TC ring is a tungsten carbide roll ring used in rolling mills.

Where are TC rings used in a rolling mill?

In bar and wire rod mills, mainly in finishing blocks and as roll sleeves in high-speed finishing mills. They are also used in hot strip, cold strip, section, plate and seamless pipe mills, in seamless pipe stretch reducing mills, and as three-dimensional rolls for cold-rolled ribbed steel bars.

What sizes of TC rings does Vimco Rolls supply?

TC rings with an outer diameter of up to 480 mm and a thickness of up to 130 mm. Share your ring drawing or dimensions with the enquiry.

What compositions are available?

Nine compositions from 94% WC with 6% binder to 70% WC with 30% binder. Hardness runs from 88.0 HRA down to 78.0 HRA, density from 14.9 to 12.8 g/cm3, bending strength from 2,200 to 2,700 N/mm2 and compressive strength from 4,200 to 2,900 N/mm2. The full table is on this page.

How does binder content change a TC ring?

In our composition table, more binder means lower hardness, lower density and lower compressive strength: 6% binder gives 88.0 HRA and 4,200 N/mm2, while 30% binder gives 78.0 HRA and 2,900 N/mm2. Bending strength is highest, at 2,700 N/mm2, at 15% binder.

Which TC ring composition is right for my stand?

It depends on the mill, the stand position in the block and the product being rolled. Send us these details with your ring dimensions and our team will recommend the composition.

What is the difference between TC rings and HSS rolls?

HSS rolls are high speed steel rolls for the finishing stands of TMT bar and wire rod mills and for rebar slitting and dog-bone stands. TC rings are tungsten carbide rings used further down the line, in finishing blocks and high-speed finishing mills, where wear is highest. Vimco Rolls manufactures both.

Where can I buy TC rings in India?

From Vimco Rolls Pvt Ltd in Dera Bassi, Punjab, a rolling mill rolls manufacturer since 1972. We manufacture and supply tungsten carbide (TC) rings in nine compositions, up to 480 mm outer diameter and 130 mm thick, alongside the rolls for every other stand of the mill.

Do you export TC rings?

Yes. Vimco Rolls supplies rolls to rolling mills across India and exports overseas, shipping to mills from Georgia to South Africa and from Nepal to Saudi Arabia. Share your destination country with your enquiry.

Which rolling mills does Vimco supply TC rings to?

We supply TC rings to wire rod and bar mills (finishing blocks and high-speed finishing mill roll sleeves), and to strip, section, plate and seamless pipe mills. Recent dispatch: a consignment of 60 TC rings to a client. You can see the mills we serve on our clients page.
